A Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows international students who have completed a program of study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada to work in the country after graduation. The PGWP is an open work permit, meaning it is not job-specific, allowing graduates to work for any employer in Canada.
Eligibility for a Post-Graduation Work Permit
To qualify for a PGWP, you must meet the following criteria: 1. Complete a Full-Time Program of Study – The program must be at least 8 months long and be completed at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). 2. Study Permit Holder – You must have held a valid study permit throughout your study period. 3. Graduation from a Recognized Institution – You must have graduated from a recognized institution, such as a Canadian college, university, or a public post-secondary institution. 4. Application Timing – You must apply for the PGWP within 180 days (6 months) of receiving your final transcript or official completion letter from your institution.
Benefits of a Post-Graduation Work Permit
★ Open Work Permit – The PGWP allows you to work for any employer in Canada, in any occupation (except for those requiring specific licensing or certification). ★ Work Anywhere in Canada – Whether you want to work in urban centers like Toronto or Vancouver or in more rural areas, the PGWP provides flexibility. ★ No Job Offer Required – Unlike other work permits, the PGWP does not require a job offer in advance. ★ Pathway to Permanent Residency – PGWP holders gain valuable Canadian work experience, which can contribute to your eligibility for permanent residency programs, such as Express Entry.
Duration of the Post-Graduation Work Permit
The length of the PGWP depends on the duration of the study program: • For a program that lasted less than 2 years, the PGWP will be valid for the same length of time as the program duration (e.g., a 1-year program = 1-year PGWP). • For a program that lasted 2 years or more, the PGWP may be issued for up to 3 years.
How to Apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit
1. Complete Your Program – Ensure that you graduate from a recognized DLI in Canada. 2. Prepare Your Documents – Gather necessary documents, including your final transcript, completion letter, and proof of study permit. 3. Apply Online – Submit your PGWP application online via the IRCC website or through a Visa Application Center (VAC). 4. Wait for Approval – Once your application is processed and approved, you will receive your PGWP, allowing you to start working in Canada.
Important Things to Know
★ Work While Waiting – If your PGWP application is still being processed and your study permit has expired, you can still work while waiting for your permit, as long as you applied for the PGWP before your study permit expired. ★ Changes to Your PGWP – The PGWP is typically issued only once in your lifetime, so it’s important to apply when you are ready and ensure all documents are complete. ★ Transitioning to Permanent Residency – Canadian work experience gained under a PGWP can help improve your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score for Express Entry and increase your chances of qualifying for permanent residency.
